Bermuda Miss World 1980 First Day Cover – Gina Swainson
This is an Official First Day Cover (FDC) from Bermuda, issued on May 8, 1980, commemorating Gina Swainson's victory as Miss World 1979-80.
Gina Ann Casandra Swainson, born June 6, 1958, is a Bermudian beauty queen who won the Miss World title in 1979 (held late that year, with her reign extending into 1980) after placing as first runner-up in Miss Universe 1979. Bermuda issued this special set of four postage stamps to honor her achievement and her status as a national pride.
The stamps (Scott #397-400 or SG 421-424) feature different portraits and scenes of Gina Swainson:
- 8¢ stamp: Gina Swainson holding a rose, with the Arms of Bermuda in the corner (post-crowning portrait).
- 20¢ stamp: Gina Swainson in a white gown with sash and scepter, seated in an ornate chair.
- 50¢ stamp: Gina Swainson waving from a traditional Bermuda carriage or similar setting with onlookers.
- $1 stamp: Gina Swainson in a relaxed pose at a residence or garden with palm trees.
The cover is an illustrated envelope with a light blue background, titled "BERMUDA MISS WORLD" at the top. It includes the four stamps affixed in a horizontal strip, postmarked with circular cancels from Bermuda dated -8MAY80A- (May 8, 1980). A decorative emblem (a golden armillary sphere-like design with Bermuda motifs) appears on the left, and the bottom notes it as the "Official First Day Cover" with the Latin motto "Quo Fata Ferunt" ("Whither the Fates Carry Us") from Bermuda's coat of arms.
These FDCs are popular among philatelists for celebrating Bermuda's only Miss World winner and are often collected mint or with special cancellations. Some versions include informational inserts about Swainson and Bermuda tourism.
