This official First Day Cover bears the 13¢ US Bicentennial stamp honoring General Nicholas Herkimer at the Battle of Oriskany, cancelled in Herkimer, New York on August 6, 1977.

The Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777 was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Revolutionary War. Herkimer, mortally wounded early in the fighting, continued to direct his militia with calm courage, preventing a complete British victory and helping secure the Mohawk Valley and the approaches to Albany.

The cachet reproduces John Trumbull’s dramatic painting of the ambush beneath the trees, while the stamp itself shows the same scene by artist John Yohn; both are tied together by the matching first-day postmark.

A fine addition for collectors of Revolutionary War, Bicentennial, or New York postal history issues, this cover remains in fresh, well-centered condition with a clear strike.
