This Artmaster first day cover features the 1976 13¢ Clara Louise Maass commemorative stamp, postmarked on the official first day of issue, August 18, 1976, in Belleville, New Jersey.
Clara Louise Maass (1876-1901) was an American nurse who volunteered for yellow fever experiments in Cuba during the Spanish-American War era. She ultimately gave her life in the cause of medical research, becoming one of the few women honored on a U.S. stamp for her humanitarian sacrifice.
The cachet depicts Maass in her nurse’s uniform alongside a historic scene of medical personnel and soldiers at a yellow fever hospital tent, with the inscription noting she “gave her life during Yellow Fever research.”
The cover is addressed to the Darwin H. Clark Company in Los Angeles, California.
A clean, well-centered example ideal for collectors of medical history, nursing, or Artmaster cachets.
