This Official First Day Cover features the 13¢ Georgia state flag stamp issued during the U.S. Bicentennial Era. It is postmarked Washington, DC on February 23, 1976, with a handsome cachet showing the seated statue of Alexander H. Stephens.
Alexander H. Stephens (1812–1883) served as a U.S. Congressman from Georgia, governor of the state, and vice president of the Confederacy. The cachet also notes Georgia’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788, tying the cover to both the Revolutionary and Civil War eras.
The stamp design reproduces Georgia’s 1879–1902 flag incorporating the Confederate battle flag, issued as part of the nationwide Bicentennial celebrations. The cachet artwork and typography are crisp and well-centered on this unaddressed cover.
A fine addition for collectors of Confederate history, Georgia topical stamps, or the 1976 Bicentennial series.
