This Art Craft first day cover features the 1967 U.S. 5¢ Erie Canal commemorative stamp, postmarked in Rome, New York on July 4, 1967. The cachet celebrates the canal’s sesquicentennial (1817–1967) with a detailed illustration of canal boats and locks, a portrait of DeWitt Clinton, and a map showing the route from Albany to Buffalo.

The Erie Canal was one of the greatest engineering achievements of early America. Completed in 1825, it linked the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, dramatically lowering shipping costs and opening the interior of the continent to trade and settlement. Its economic impact helped establish New York City as the nation’s premier port and spurred westward expansion.

A charming detail is the inclusion of the opening bars and title of the folk song “Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal,” also known as “Low Bridge, Everybody Down.” The cachet maker, Art Craft, was renowned for its historically accurate artwork on mid-century U.S. first day covers.

A fine addition for collectors of U.S. transportation history, inland waterways, or Art Craft cachets, this cover remains in excellent condition with a crisp strike of the Rome, NY first-day postmark.
