This Artmaster cachet First Day Cover features the 5¢ Civil War Centennial stamp issued April 9, 1965, postmarked at Appomattox, Virginia on the exact centennial of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant.

The stamp and cachet commemorate the formal end of the American Civil War at the McLean House in Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The design incorporates Lincoln’s famous phrase “With malice toward none,” underscoring the theme of national reconciliation in 1965.

The striking black-and-white cachet shows Lee and Grant on horseback before the McLean House, with crossed Union and Confederate flags below. “Artmaster” appears in the lower left, identifying the well-known cachet maker.

The cover is addressed to S.H. Ross in Broomall, Pennsylvania, a historic Philadelphia suburb that was once part of the original Welsh Tract land grants.

A clean, well-centered example ideal for Civil War topical or U.S. postal history collections.
