This 1965 Civil War Centennial 5¢ First Day Cover features the Appomattox commemorative stamp cancelled on April 9, 1965, in Appomattox, Virginia, with a handsome Art Craft cachet.

The stamp marks the centennial of the Civil War’s conclusion at Appomattox Court House, where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. The design incorporates the famous Lincoln phrase “With Malice Toward None…” and silhouettes of a soldier and stacked rifles, evoking the war’s end and the hope for reconciliation.

The Art Craft cachet depicts crossed Union and Confederate flags beneath a bald eagle, flanked by three period soldiers including a drummer boy, framed by a laurel wreath and the dates 1961-1965.

The cover is addressed to Joseph C. Asin, M.D., in Newark, New York, a small town in the Finger Lakes region with its own rich 19th-century history.

A strong addition for Civil War or Art Craft collectors, this well-preserved FDC displays clear postmarks and attractive dual-flag artwork.
