This 1963 First Day Cover features the 5¢ Alliance for Progress commemorative stamp, postmarked in Washington, DC on August 17, 1963. The cover bears the official first-day cancel and the printed inscription “COMMEMORATING THE 1st Day of Issue.”

The Alliance for Progress was President John F. Kennedy’s landmark initiative to foster economic cooperation and social reform across Latin America during the Cold War. Launched in 1961, the program sought to counter communist influence by promoting democratic institutions, land reform, and infrastructure development throughout the Western Hemisphere.

The stamp’s dramatic design shows a hand raising a flaming torch before a stylized map of the Americas, symbolizing enlightenment and unity. The cover was serviced by Loral Stamp Co. of Bronx, New York, a mid-century philatelic dealer whose return address appears in the lower right corner.

A clean, well-centered example ideal for collectors of Kennedy-era issues, Latin American topicals, or 1960s U.S. commemoratives.
